Position Description

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive and problem-focused history and physical examinations
  • Document family pedigrees and craniofacial developmental and congenital anomalies
  • Interpret laboratory results and diagnostic procedures to establish a working diagnosis
  • Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions
  • Request, gather, and summarize outside medical records and operative reports
  • Order and perform diagnostic procedures and studies, such as:
    • EMG
    • Electrocardiogram
    • Labs
    • X-ray examinations
    • Special x-ray examinations, including CT, MRI, and bone scans
  • Order and review orthognathic and craniofacial virtual surgical plans
  • Prepare surgical treatment plans and case presentations
  • Perform procedures like regional anesthesia and blocks
  • Perform minor outpatient procedures, such as:
    • Hardware removal
    • Incision and drainage
    • Suture removal
    • Wound closure
    • Wound debridement
    • Tissue biopsy
    • Dressing and drains management
    • Placement of maxillomandibular fixation/immobilization
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, such as:
    • Diagnostic facial and oral photos
    • Cephalometric/anthropometric measurements
    • Injection of temporomandibular joints
    • Basic physical therapy and instruction for post-surgical care
    • Musculoskeletal functional assessments
  • Assist in surgeries as delegated by the surgeon
    • Orthognathic surgery
    • Craniofacial and cleft surgery
    • Bone graft and free flap surgeries
    • Craniofacial tumor removal
    • Dentoalveolar surgery
  • Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer medication
  • Order consults or refer to consultants
  • Evaluate, screen, and counsel patients on health maintenance
  • Promote the utilization of community resources
  • Conduct pre- and post-operative rounds, write orders, and perform admission and discharge work in the hospital setting
  • Take call for surgical cases and provide on-call coverage (approx. 2 weeks/month)

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSE, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR OTHER EXPER­TISE REQUIRED. The contractor must have:

  • A certificate for training as a physician assistant and current or pending license in Mary­land
  • Minimum one (1) year of experience in surgical or emergency care.
  • Strong communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, interpersonal and time management skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities and pay close attention to detail.
